Published in 1878, "Anna Karenina" is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, a Russian author. Considered by many authors to be the greatest work of literature ever written, Tolstoy himself referred to it as his first true novel. Initially released in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger, the novel is a complex work in eight parts with more than a dozen major characters, spanning over 800 pages in two volumes depending on the translation.
Themes of betrayal, faith, family, marriage, Imperial Russian society, desire, and rural vs. city life are explored in "Anna Karenina". The plot revolves around the extramarital affair between Anna and the charming cavalry officer Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky, which scandalizes the social circles of Saint Petersburg and leads the young lovers to flee to Italy in search of happiness, which proves futile. Upon returning to Russia, their lives continue to spiral out of control.
