After War and Peace, Tolstoy's next major novel was Anna Karenina. Tolstoy once told his wife that in order for a work to be good, one must love its main basic idea. He expressed his love for the family idea in Anna Karenina, while loving the national idea in War and Peace.
The initial idea for the plot of Anna Karenina came to Tolstoy seven years before he actually wrote the novel. In her diary, Tolstoy's wife wrote that he had shared with her his vision of a married woman from high society who had lost herself. He explained that his goal was to portray her as pitiful, but not guilty.
