Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina was once hailed by Thomas Mann as "the greatest social novel of world literature." John Neumeier, upon reading the novel, found himself captivated not just by the main characters and storyline, but also by the multitude of thematic connections woven throughout the narrative. The tale revolves around three families, a fact that Neumeier points out as significant. He notes, "Tolstoy chose to release 'Anna Karenina' in installments over several years, creating a sense of ongoing contemporary narrative akin to today's television series. The novel's conclusion, or rather the lack thereof following the death of the eponymous character, posed a unique challenge for me. I aimed to breathe life and relevance into the story by selecting key emotional moments and essential characters to form the foundation of an evening-length ballet production."
